Tips & Things to Watch For
Third-Party Payment Methods May Prevent Cancellation
CriticalIf you subscribed to Spotify Premium through Apple App Store, Google Play, or a telecom carrier, you must cancel through that platform, not through Spotify directly. Spotify's own cancellation process won't work, and you may continue being charged. Check 'Account' settings to see your payment method.
Student Premium Includes Full Audiobook Access
Pro TipSpotify Premium Student ($5.99/month in US) includes the same 15 hours of audiobook listening as the regular Premium plan ($10.99/month), effectively giving students 45% off audiobook access. Verification through SheerID is required but sometimes doesn't check enrollment status rigorously for international students.
Premium Individual Can Be Upgraded to Family Mid-Cycle
Pro TipYou can upgrade from Individual to Family Premium at any time. Spotify pro-rates the difference in cost for the remaining days of your billing cycle. All existing individual benefits (including unused audiobook hours) transfer, and you immediately get Family plan benefits.
Dark Patterns to Watch
- Multiple confirmation screens with retention offers
- Emotionally manipulative language about losing features
- Visual hierarchy emphasizing retention offers over cancellation button
- Cancellation button placed at bottom after scrolling past retention offers
- Use of loss aversion by showing all features you'll lose
Retention Tactics
- Shows list of features you'll lose access to
- May offer discounted rate (typically 3 months at reduced price)
- Reminds you of playlists and personalized content
- Shows remaining time on current billing period
- Suggests downgrading to free tier instead of canceling
