Tips & Things to Watch For
Data over storage limit deleted after 30 days of downgrade/cancellation
CriticalWhen you downgrade or cancel iCloud+, if your stored data exceeds the new limit (e.g., 5GB free tier), Apple gives you 30 days to reduce usage or re-subscribe. After 30 days, Apple may delete files, photos, and backups to bring you under the limit. You cannot access iCloud data during this period if over limit.
6TB and 12TB plans are poor value compared to cloud alternatives
Pro TipThe 6TB ($29.99/month) and 12TB ($59.99/month) plans cost significantly more than competitors. Google One offers 5TB for $24.99/month, Microsoft 365 includes 1TB per user (6TB for family) at $9.99/month with Office apps. These high-tier iCloud+ plans are only worthwhile if you heavily use Apple ecosystem features.
Apple One bundle includes iCloud+ and can be combined with standalone iCloud+ for more storage
Pro TipApple One includes iCloud+ storage (50GB Individual, 200GB Family, 2TB Premier). You can subscribe to BOTH Apple One AND a separate iCloud+ plan to stack storage. Example: Apple One Premier (2TB) + iCloud+ 2TB plan = 4TB total storage. This is the only way to get 4TB+ without jumping to the expensive 6TB plan.
Dark Patterns to Watch
- No direct 'Cancel' button - must select downgrade to free plan
- Cancellation option buried in Settings rather than account management
- Terminology uses 'Downgrade' instead of 'Cancel' which feels negative
- Multi-step navigation through nested menus
- Shows warnings about what you'll lose without clear cancel confirmation
Retention Tactics
- Shows warnings about losing storage and features
- Displays how much data you have stored that exceeds free plan
- Warns about HomeKit Secure Video and Private Relay being disabled
- No mention of cancellation on marketing pages - only upgrade paths
